5 Essential Oils for Hair Growth

Essential oils have really changed the game when it comes to beauty. There are a wide variety of oils in the market that have been packaged and sold under the essential oil umbrella. These are both effective and efficient in their results. As far as hair growth is concerned, these are a few varieties of essential oils that not only promote hair growth but also nourish the hair follicle and strengthen the existing hair.

Tea Tree Oil

One of the commonest known essential oils, tea tree oil is extracted from an Australian tree by the name of Melaleuca Alternifolia. It is used in treating almost any kind of skin and hair problem.

It is one of the top remedies for dandruff, as it moisturizes the scalp and relieves dryness and itching. Its hair growth properties are unmatched as well. It works deep into the hair follicles and unclogs them, and aids in the normal flow of the skin oils.

Application for hair growth:

Mix 2-3 drops of tea tree oil with 1-2 Tbsp sweet almond oil or coconut oil

This is a strong oil by nature so some other oil should be applied on the scalp first over which the above mixture can be applied.

Preserve in a towel for 15-20 minutes

Wash off with shampoo and air dry

Lavender Essential Oil

The sweet smelling lavender oil is extracted from the flowers of Lavandula Angustifolia.

It is a mild and soothing oil and congenial with any hair type. Its main function is to improve blood circulation in the scalp that eventually leads to good hair growth and prevention of any further hair loss. It moisturizes the scalp and balances out the sebum production. It also relieves stress and provides restful sleep.

Application for hair growth:

Mix 8-10 drops in 2 Tbsp of warm extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil.

Massage this mixture on the scalp with your fingers.

Wrap your head with a towel and leave it on overnight.

In the morning wash off with shampoo and air dry.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary oil is a strong smelling essential oil with a minty and woody aroma. Extracted from the leaves of the herb Rosmarinus Officinalis, it is often used in many foods for this exact property. As for hair, it is invigorating oil full of antioxidants that combats the hair problems of premature graying and thinning . The properties of stimulation of hair follicles and accentuating the blood supply to the scalp are what give a good hair growth. Its regular use will ensure healthy, strong and non-greasy hair that is also thicker.

Application for hair growth:

A hot oil treatment is recommended with rosemary oil.

In a pan, heat 3 Tbsp olive oil and take it off the flame in 1-2 minutes.

After this oil cools down a bit add 10 drops of rosemary oil.

Preserve in a towel for 30 minutes

Wash off with shampoo and air dry

Chamomile Essential Oil

From the varieties of Chamomile from which essential oils are extracted, the yellow-colored Roman Chamomile oil that is obtained from the plant Anthemis Nobilis is the one that is commonly used for hair care. Oil that is soothing and has excellent anti-inflammatory properties , it protects the hair from the pollutants in the environment, making them stronger and healthier. If used as a rinse to condition, it naturally lightens the hair color and gives it a gorgeous golden sheen.

Application for hair growth:

Mix a 7-8 drops of chamomile oil with 2 Tbsp of Jojoba oil.

Massage this mixture in the scalp.

Preserve in a towel for 10 minutes.

Wash off with shampoo and air dry.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil has a cooling effect that is mildly tingling and pleasant. When it comes in contact with the skin, it improves blood flow to the area. This exact property is what is useful for rejuvenating hair follicles and promoting hair growth. The cleansing action of this oil aids in opening up of clogged pores and encourages a normal flow of skin oils, making the scalp well nourished and healthy.

Application for hair growth:

Mix 5 drops each of peppermint oil and lavender oil to 2 Tbsp warm coconut oil.

Massage this mixture in the scalp.   

Preserve in a towel for 15-20 minutes.

Wash off with shampoo and air dry.
