Core Concepts: From Macros to Micronutrients

Macronutrients (Macros)

The three main classes of nutrients — carbohydrates, proteins, and fats — that the body requires in relatively large amounts and uses primarily for energy and structural functions. Each provides a specific number of calories per gram (carbohydrates and protein: 4 kcal/g; fat: 9 kcal/g).

Micronutrients

Vitamins and minerals needed in smaller quantities but essential for a wide range of biological processes, including immune function, bone health, and energy metabolism. Unlike macronutrients, most micronutrients provide no calories.

Dietary Fibre

A type of carbohydrate found in plant foods that the body cannot fully digest. Soluble fibre dissolves in water and can help moderate blood glucose levels; insoluble fibre adds bulk to stool and supports digestive regularity. Glycemic Index (GI)

Bioavailability

Nutrients the body cannot synthesise on its own — or cannot make in sufficient quantities — and therefore must obtain from food. The essential nutrients include certain amino acids, fatty acids, most vitamins, and all dietary minerals.

Antioxidants

Compounds that help neutralise free radicals — unstable molecules that can damage cells when present in excess. Common dietary antioxidants include vitamins C and E, selenium, and various plant-derived polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Phytonutrients

Biologically active compounds found naturally in plants (from the Greek phyto, meaning plant). While not classified as essential nutrients, many phytonutrients — such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and glucosinolates — are associated with health-protective effects in observational research.
