For Dogs

  • DA2PP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza): Typically given as a series of 3–4 shots starting at 6–8 weeks of age, then boosted every 3 years in adults.

For Cats

  • Rabies: Same legal mandate applies. Schedule mirrors dogs based on local law and vaccine type.
  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia): Started at 6–8 weeks, given in a series, then boosted every 1–3 years in adults.

Core vaccine

Titer test

A blood test that measures the level of antibodies in a pet's bloodstream to assess whether existing immunity from a previous vaccine is still protective.

Zoonotic disease

Maternal antibodies

Protective proteins passed from a mother to her offspring through milk or before birth, which can temporarily block a puppy or kitten's response to vaccines.

Common Non-Core Vaccines for Dogs

  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough): Recommended for dogs that visit boarding facilities, dog parks, or groomers. Available as injectable, intranasal, or oral formulations.
  • Leptospirosis: Advised for dogs exposed to wildlife, standing water, or rural environments. This is a zoonotic disease — it can infect people too.
  • Lyme Disease: Recommended in tick-endemic regions, particularly the Northeast, Midwest, and Pacific Coast of the U.S.
  • Canine Influenza (H3N2/H3N8): Considered for dogs in high-contact social settings where outbreaks have been reported.

Common Non-Core Vaccines for Cats

  • Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV): AAFP considers this core for all kittens given exposure risk; for adult cats, it's recommended based on outdoor access or contact with unknown cats.
  • Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV): For cats at risk through outdoor roaming or fighting.
  • Chlamydia and Bordetella: Occasionally recommended for multi-cat households or shelter environments.

How Vaccination Schedules Work Over Time

Vaccination isn't a one-time event. Puppies and kittens receive a series of vaccines spaced weeks apart because maternal antibodies — passed through the mother's milk — can interfere with early immune responses. The series ensures protection kicks in as those maternal antibodies fade.

After the initial puppy or kitten series, most pets receive a booster around one year of age. Beyond that, many core vaccines shift to a three-year cycle, though some (like rabies) depend on the specific vaccine licensed for your state and local ordinance. Non-core vaccines often follow annual schedules since immunity duration can be shorter.

Titer testing is an option some owners explore — a blood test that measures existing antibody levels to determine whether a booster is actually needed. While titers can be informative for some core vaccines, they are not universally accepted as legal substitutes for rabies vaccination. Discuss this option with your veterinarian before making decisions based on titer results alone.

Vaccine reactions are uncommon but possible. Mild lethargy or soreness at the injection site for 24–48 hours is normal. Rarely, more serious reactions (facial swelling, vomiting, difficulty breathing) require immediate veterinary attention.
